The contact stated the rear end of the vehicle shifted independently to the left and he lost control of the vehicle causing him to crash into a tree. All four air bags deployed. The contact did not sustain any injuries nor sought medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was not drivable. The insurance company deemed the vehicle totaled. The contact towed the vehicle first to a towing lot and then towed it again to a body shop. The vehicle was not diagnosed. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 9,000.

The vehicle also showed a system fault error with the traction control and Forward Collision Avoidance warning lights illuminated. The failure occurred at various speeds. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer who was able to obtain a code from the vehicle regarding the failures; however, the contact was not made aware of the exact error or cause. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer. The approximate failure mileage was 3,200.
